Dedication from 1 to 7000

Lighting is all about visibility and perception. Lighting design is like Photography, it tells a story by manipulating light and shadow. Combining his passion with photography and his commercial experience in art direction and studio photography operation, Peter is able to let his lighting designs add to the context of already beautiful objects and spaces.

Same as the thousands of photo shoot before, Peter often asks these questions prior to beginning each project:

“What are the materials?”

“What do I love about it? “

“Why is it here?

“What is the artist’s/designer’s intent?”

When the answers come to him, Peter will proceed to light his objects. It’s important letting viewers see the object/space through our eyes. Only light lets us guide the viewer’s eye and draw attention to the fine details we would like to portrait. Be it a 1cm diameter yellow diamond or 70m long Boeing 747, Peter studies everything and utilises intelligent use of light to make it come to life. That’s how each story unfolds.

Stories

Telling the stories with good lighting design. Peter believes lighting enhances every piece of art. To tell a good story of an art piece, Peter studies its nature and the story behind, the environment limitations and the curators’ requirements. To render the shape of a sculpture, to accentuate a calligraphy or internally lit a vase, Peter will study everything that the artist’s work offers before providing the optimal balance that delivers superior viewing experiences with the right light intensity. Applying controlled light source with high-quality light fitting, minimise spill light, eliminate glaring, precisely select the spectrum of light emitted for the best colour rendering under conservation.

Visual experiences dominate museums and exhibitions. Visitors could only enjoy the experience when lighting provides all the essential elements.  Lighting can address direction and create rhythms, which are important when determining how people experience art. Peter thinks that visitors in museum are part of the scenes and his design objective is to help guide visitors as they explore these scenes.

A unique methodology for Museum. Layers of light enrich the visual experience. Using single or multiple light sources, size, contrast and darkness of each shadow can be crafted. Hierarchy of lighting does not merely apply to 3D artworks. In some cases, evenly distributed lighting may not be the best way for a 2D painting.  The quantity and varieties are always the challenge. Art pieces can be hanged to the wall, laid on the floor or enclosed in an exhibiting box. Opacity, reflectance and translucency of background materials or floor finishing must be considered. Sometimes, artworks come in pairs or even in a series. Lighting design must be flexible for each individual requirement and be able to customise for replacements or new subjects.

Conservation is fundamental. All visible light damages fragile artwork and the degree of damages varies with different materials. The artwork should be illuminated just bright enough that the visitors could enjoy it. LED light source is the best choice. Beside low energy consumption and lower heat emittance, its low UV radiation is the key advantage. Facilitated by smart systems (e.g. Dali system/ DMX system) fragile pieces are usually illuminated in a dimly way. Sensor and timer should be applied to have the pieces lit as little as possible.
